Having just returned from an incredible trip, I’m bursting to share every detail, ensuring your visit to this Austrian gem is nothing short of perfect. Getting There & Around: Smooth Sailing to the Sound of Music City

Arrival

  • By Air: We flew into Salzburg Airport W. A. Mozart (SZG). It’s a small, efficient airport located very close to the city center. A taxi will get you to your accommodation in about 15-20 minutes for around €15-€25. Alternatively, bus line 2 (direction Obergnigl) or line 10 (direction Sam) runs frequently to the Hauptbahnhof (main train station) or city center for about €2.90 per ticket.
  • By Train: Salzburg Hauptbahnhof is a major hub with excellent connections across Austria and Europe. We arrived from Vienna via an OBB train, which was comfortable and scenic. If you’re coming from Munich, it’s a quick 1.5-2 hour journey.

Getting Around Salzburg

Salzburg’s Old Town is incredibly walkable, a pedestrian’s paradise of charming alleys and hidden courtyards. For anything further afield, the city’s bus system is top-notch – punctual, clean, and comprehensive.

  • Walking: Most main attractions in the Old Town are easily reached on foot. Wear comfortable shoes!
  • Buses: Single tickets cost around €2.90-€3.20 if purchased from the driver, slightly less from a tabacconist or ticket machine. Day passes are also available.
  • The Salzburg Card: A MUST-HAVE! Seriously, if you plan to visit multiple attractions, this card is your best friend and budget saver. It grants free entry to most attractions, free use of public transport (including the Untersberg cable car!), and even includes the Hohensalzburg Fortress funicular.
  • Salzburg Card Prices (approx. 2024):
    • 24 hours: €30-€34
    • 48 hours: €40-€46
    • 72 hours: €45-€50

Duration

I recommend a minimum of 2-3 full days to cover the main historical sites, enjoy a leisurely pace, and perhaps take a short trip to a nearby lake. We spent 3 full days, and it felt just right.

Best Season

  • Spring (April-May) & Autumn (September-October): My absolute favorite! Mild weather, fewer crowds than summer, and beautiful natural colors.
  • Summer (June-August): Warm and vibrant, but can be very crowded and accommodation prices higher due to the Salzburg Festival.
  • Winter (November-March): Magical, especially during Christmas markets (late Nov-Dec). Expect cold weather and potential snow, but the city looks like a fairytale.
