Getting There & Around: Seamless Transfers

My adventure began upon arrival at Nadi International Airport (NAN), the main gateway to Fiji. Getting from the airport to my resort was straightforward, thanks to several reliable options:

Airport Shuttles: Services like Rosie Holidays or TTF offer comfortable shared transfers. I booked a return ticket from Nadi Airport to Denarau for about FJD 25-35 per person.
Taxis: Readily available outside the terminal. A ride from Nadi Airport to Denarau cost me around FJD 30-40, depending on the time of day and negotiation.
Private Transfers: Many resorts offer their own private car services, which can be pricier (FJD 50-80+) but convenient if you want direct, no-wait service.

Exploring the Islands: Inter-Island Travel

Fiji’s magic truly unfolds when you venture beyond Viti Levu. I used these popular options:

Ferries: South Sea Cruises and Malolo Cat are excellent for reaching the Mamanuca and some Yasawa Islands. A return trip to the Mamanucas (e.g., Mana Island) typically costs FJD 120-200 per person. Book in advance, especially during peak season!
Seaplanes/Helicopters: For a more scenic and faster transfer to remote resorts, companies like Turtle Airways offer seaplane flights. These are pricier, starting from around FJD 300-500+ one-way.
Local Buses: On Viti Levu, local buses are a super affordable way to get around (FJD 1-5 per ride). They might be slower but offer a glimpse into local life.

This is what Fiji is famous for, and it did not disappoint! Every beach felt like a postcard come to life.

Denarau Island: While not the most ‘natural’, the resort beaches here are well-maintained, offer calm swimming, and are perfect for water sports. Great for convenience!
Mamanuca Islands: My personal favourite! I took a day trip to Cloud 9, a floating bar, and explored beaches on Mana Island. The sands are whiter, and the water is an unbelievable shade of turquoise. You can easily spend days here snorkelling, swimming, and just relaxing. Cast Away movie fans will recognize Modriki Island!

Stepping Back in Time: Historical & Cultural Places

Beyond the beaches, Fiji has a fascinating history and rich cultural heritage worth exploring.

Levuka, Ovalau Island (UNESCO World Heritage Site): This was my deep dive into Fiji’s colonial past. As the first colonial capital, Levuka retains much of its 19th-century architecture. Fiji Museum (Suva): Located in Thurston Gardens, this museum is a treasure trove. Savouring Fiji: Restaurants & Local Cuisine

Fijian food is a delightful blend of indigenous ingredients, Indian influences, and fresh seafood. Don’t leave without trying these!

Lovo Feast: A traditional Fijian method of cooking food (meat, fish, vegetables) in an underground earth oven. Many resorts offer Lovo nights, often combined with a Meke (traditional dance) performance. Prices vary but often included in cultural dinner packages (FJD 70-120 per person).

While Fiji isn’t known as a party destination, Nadi and especially Suva offer some lively spots if you’re looking for an evening out.

Denarau Island (Nadi): Most resorts have their own bars and lounges, often featuring live music, cultural shows (like the Meke), or DJ nights. Check out the Bula Bar & Bistro at Denarau Marina for a more casual, lively vibe. No specific «club entry» fees here, just pay for your drinks.
Suva City: The capital has a more robust nightlife scene.
- O’Reilly’s Bar: A long-standing popular Irish pub, known for live bands and a vibrant atmosphere.
- Traps Bar: A multi-level bar and club that attracts a diverse crowd. Good for dancing!
- Bad Dog Cafe: Offers a mix of dining, drinks, and a lively bar area, especially on weekends.

Entry to most clubs in Suva is usually free, but some special events might have a cover charge of FJD 10-20. Drinks prices are similar to resort bars.

Essential Tips for Your Ideal Fiji Travel Time

Best Time to Visit: The dry season, from May to October, offers sunny days, lower humidity, and less chance of cyclones. This is ideal for water activities. The wet season (Nov-April) can be humid with heavy showers, but it’s also less crowded.
Currency: Fijian Dollar (FJD). ATMs are available in major towns and resorts. Credit cards are widely accepted in tourist areas, but cash is useful for smaller vendors and remote villages.
Language: English is widely spoken and understood. Learning a few Fijian phrases like «Bula» (hello/welcome) and «Vinaka» (thank you) will go a long way!
Connectivity: Pick up a local SIM card (Vodafone or Digicel) at Nadi Airport for affordable data and calls. Wi-Fi is available at most resorts, though sometimes at an extra cost or slower speeds.
