Around the city, rideshares are your best friend. They’re affordable and safe. Matatus (public minibuses) are cheap (Ksh 50-100, ~$0.3-0.7) but can be confusing for first-timers. I mostly stuck to Uber/Bolt for convenience.

Where to Stay? Options for Every Budget

Nairobi offers a range of accommodation from luxury hotels in Karen or Westlands to boutique guesthouses and budget-friendly hostels. I stayed in a mid-range hotel in Westlands, which was perfect for accessing nightlife and restaurants. Nairobi is rich in history, and I loved exploring its past:

Wildlife Right on Your Doorstep!

This is where Nairobi truly shines – a safari experience without leaving the city!

• Nairobi National Park: Lions, rhinos, giraffes against a city skyline – it’s surreal! I did a half-day safari. Entry: $43 USD for non-residents (adult). Safari vehicle hire is extra, expect Ksh 8,000-15,000 (~$55-100) for a half-day, depending on type and duration.
• Giraffe Centre: Feed Rothschild giraffes by hand! An unforgettable experience. Entry: Ksh 1,500 (approx. $10 USD) for non-residents.
• David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (Elephant Orphanage): Watch baby elephants being fed and learn about their rescue and rehabilitation. It’s heartwarming! Viewing is usually 11 AM-12 PM daily. Suggested donation: Ksh 1,500 (approx. $10 USD).

A Culinary Journey: My Taste of Nairobi

Nairobi’s food scene is incredibly diverse. You must try local Kenyan dishes like ‘Nyama Choma’ (roasted meat) and ‘Ugali’ (cornmeal porridge).

• Street Food/Local Eateries: Delicious and budget-friendly. A hearty meal can be found for Ksh 300-800 (approx. $2-5 USD).

Nairobi After Dark: Vibrant & Energetic!

The city comes alive at night, especially in the Westlands area. I enjoyed the bustling atmosphere!

• Clubs & Bars: Places like The Alchemist Bar (Westlands) offer a fantastic vibe, great music, and local craft beers. Kiza Lounge and Milan are popular for dancing.
• Drinks: A local beer typically costs Ksh 300-500 (approx. $2-3.5 USD), while cocktails can range from Ksh 700-1,200 (approx. $5-8 USD).
• Cover Charges: Some clubs, especially on weekends, might have a cover charge of Ksh 500-1,000 (approx. $3.5-7 USD).

No Beaches in Nairobi? No Problem!

Now, about beaches – Nairobi is an inland city, so you won’t find sandy shores here. BUT, Kenya boasts some of the most stunning coastlines in the world! If beaches are a must-have for your ‘ideal travel time,’ I highly recommend extending your trip to:

• Mombasa: A historic port city with beautiful beaches and Swahili culture.
• Diani Beach: South of Mombasa, consistently ranked among Africa’s best beaches.

You can reach the coast by a short domestic flight (approx. 1 hour, Ksh 5,000-10,000 / $35-70 USD one-way) or take the modern SGR train (approx. 5 hours, Ksh 1,000-3,000 / $7-20 USD one-way for economy/first class).

When to Go & Handy Tips for Your Trip

• Best Time to Visit: The dry seasons (January-February and June-October) are ideal for wildlife viewing and outdoor activities.
• Currency: Kenyan Shilling (Ksh). USD is widely accepted in tourist areas, but it’s good to have local currency for smaller purchases.
• Safety: Be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas. Avoid displaying valuables. As mentioned, use rideshares at night.
• Bargaining: Common in markets.
