This vibrant city truly offers a perfect blend of stunning natural beauty, rich history, captivating culture, and fantastic dining. If you’re planning a visit to the ‘City of Light,’ here’s everything I learned to make your trip absolutely ideal – from getting around to the best historical sites, delicious food, and lively nightlife!
Getting There & Getting Around Perth
Perth Airport (PER) is well-connected. Once you land, here are your transfer options:
- Airport Shuttle (e.g., Airport Connect): A convenient and cost-effective option, typically costing around AU$15-20 one-way to city centre hotels.
- Taxi/Ride-share (Uber/Didi): Expect to pay around AU$40-60 to the city centre. Great if you’re in a group or arriving late.
- Public Bus (Transperth Route 380/40): The most budget-friendly, but might involve a transfer. Cash fare is around AU$4-5, but cheaper with a SmartRider.
Once you’re in Perth, getting around is a breeze:
- Transperth (Buses, Trains, Ferries): Perth has an excellent public transport network. I highly recommend getting a SmartRider card (purchase for ~AU$10, then top up). It gives you a 20% discount on fares. A typical 2-zone cash fare is ~AU$4.90, but ~AU$3.92 with SmartRider.
- CAT Buses (Central Area Transit): These are your best friend! They are completely FREE and run on Red, Blue, and Yellow routes around the city centre and Northbridge. Invaluable for hopping between attractions.
- Walkability: The city centre itself, Elizabeth Quay, and Barrack Street Jetty are very walkable and enjoyable on foot.
- Car Rental: Not essential for city exploration, but definitely recommended if you plan day trips further afield, like to Margaret River or the Pinnacles.

- Northbridge: The hub for diverse cuisine, especially Asian. ‘Authentic Bites Dumpling House’ is fantastic for a quick, delicious meal (AU$15-25). For something more upscale, ‘Shadow Wine Bar’ offers modern Australian fare (mains AU$40-60).
- Fremantle: A seafood paradise! ‘Cicerello’s’ or ‘Kailis Fish Market Cafe’ are iconic for casual fish & chips (AU$20-30). For a mid-range dining experience, ‘Bread in Common’ is excellent (mains AU$30-50).
- Fine Dining: For a special occasion, ‘C Restaurant’ (the only revolving restaurant in WA) offers incredible views and high-end dining (expect AU$80+ per person). ‘Wildflower’ at The COMO Treasury is another exceptional Modern Australian experience (AU$100+).
- Coffee Culture: Perth takes its coffee seriously! Expect to pay around AU$5-6 for a quality flat white or cappuccino.
Perth After Dark: Clubs & Nightlife
When the sun goes down, Perth lights up, especially in Northbridge:
- Northbridge: This is the epicentre for clubs, bars, and live music.
- Clubs: ‘Metropolis Fremantle’ is a larger club if you’re in Freo, while Northbridge has various spots like ‘Dragon Palace’ playing diverse music. Entry fees are usually around AU$10-20 on weekends.
- Bars: ‘Mechanics Institute’ offers a great rooftop experience, while ‘Brass Monkey Hotel’ is a popular pub with live music. Expect to pay AU$10-15 for a beer or wine, and cocktails around AU$20+.
- Leederville: Offers a slightly more relaxed and ‘cooler’ bar scene. ‘The Garden’ is a popular spot with an outdoorsy vibe.
Ideal Travel Time & Budgeting Tips
- Best Time to Visit:
- Spring (September-November) and Autumn (March-May) offer the most pleasant weather for exploring.
- Summer (December-February) is hot (often 30°C+), perfect for beaches but can be intense for sightseeing.
- Winter (June-August) is cooler with some rain, but still plenty to do indoors.
- Duration: 5-7 days is ideal to experience Perth and Fremantle thoroughly. Add more days if you plan to visit Rottnest Island, Swan Valley, or take longer trips.
- Budget: Perth can be on the pricier side. A good estimate for a daily budget (excluding accommodation) for food, activities, and transport is AU$100-150+ per person.
- SmartRider: As mentioned, get one for transport savings!
