Wow, just got back from an incredible trip to Pretoria, South Africa, and I’m still buzzing! Before I went, I mostly thought of Cape Town or Johannesburg, but Pretoria totally stole my heart. Pretoria is bursting with history! I spent days just soaking it all in.

From O.R. Tambo International Airport (JNB):

• Gautrain: My preferred option! Take the Gautrain from JNB to Hatfield Station in Pretoria. It’s clean, safe, and efficient. Cost: Approx. R190 per person (~$11 USD), plus a once-off R17 for a Gold Card. From Hatfield, an Uber/Bolt or local taxi is readily available to your accommodation.

Around Pretoria:

• Ride-sharing Apps (Uber/Bolt): My go-to for convenience and safety. They are widely available and reasonably priced for most trips within the city.

No Beaches? No Problem! Embracing Pretoria’s Inland Charm

Now, about beaches… Pretoria is landlocked, so you won’t find any ocean shores here! But don’t despair if you’re looking to cool off. Many hotels have lovely pools, and there are several fantastic public swimming pools or water parks like Acacia Pool or Piscine Holiday Resort for a fun day out, especially during the hot summer months. Or consider a day trip to Hartbeespoort Dam (about an hour’s drive) for watersports and beautiful scenery!

Accommodation: Your Home Away From Home

Pretoria offers a wide range of accommodation. I stayed in a lovely guesthouse in the eastern suburbs, which felt very safe.

When to Visit: The Ideal Travel Time for Pretoria

I visited in spring (September-November), and it was perfect! The jacaranda trees were in full bloom, making the city a purple paradise. The weather was pleasantly warm, not too hot.

• Autumn (March-May) is also lovely, with mild temperatures.
• Summer (December-February) can be very hot, with afternoon thunderstorms, but it’s still good for indoor activities and pools.

Pretoria truly exceeded my expectations. It’s a city rich in history, culture, and natural beauty, with a welcoming atmosphere. It offers a more relaxed pace than Johannesburg but still has plenty to see and do. Plan at least 3-4 full days to really explore. You won’t regret adding this beautiful South African gem to your travel itinerary!
