Just returned from an incredible trip to Pretoria, South Africa, and I’m still buzzing! This city, often overshadowed by Johannesburg or Cape Town, is an absolute gem brimming with history, culture, and surprising charm. If you’re planning a visit, consider this your ultimate guide – I’ve got all the details you need for an ideal travel experience!

Getting There & Around (Transfer Details)

My journey began at O.R. Tambo International Airport (JNB) in Johannesburg. The easiest and safest way to Pretoria is definitely the Gautrain. It’s clean, efficient, and affordable.

Gautrain from JNB to Pretoria: Approximately R186 — R200 (about $10-$11 USD) for a one-way trip, taking around 35-40 minutes to Hatfield or Pretoria Station. You’ll need to buy a Gautrain card (R20, about $1 USD) and load it.
Shuttle/Taxi: Private shuttles or metered taxis are also available, but significantly more expensive, roughly R600-R800 ($30-$45 USD).
Uber/Bolt: Readily available and a good option for getting around within Pretoria. Fares are reasonable; a short ride within the city centre might be R40-R80 ($2-$4 USD). For longer distances or a trip from JNB, Uber can be R350-R500 ($18-$27 USD), depending on surge pricing. I mostly relied on Uber for convenience.

Union Buildings: (Free to visit grounds) My absolute favourite! The iconic seat of the South African government, designed by Sir Herbert Baker. The sprawling gardens are perfect for a leisurely stroll, offering panoramic views of the city. Don’t miss the impressive Nelson Mandela statue. Allow 1-2 hours.
Voortrekker Monument: (Entry: R100-R120, about $5-$6 USD) A colossal granite structure commemorating the Voortrekkers’ journey. The detailed frieze inside is breathtaking, depicting crucial moments in Afrikaner history. The views from the top are spectacular. Allow a good 2-3 hours here.
Church Square: (Free) The historical heart of Pretoria, dominated by the statue of Paul Kruger. Surrounded by beautiful old buildings like the Palace of Justice. It’s a great spot to feel the city’s pulse and observe local life.

Kream Restaurant (Brooklyn Bridge): For a more upscale and celebratory meal, Kream is fantastic. Their menu is modern, sophisticated, and the presentation is artful. Expect to pay R300-R600 ($16-$33 USD) per main course, but it’s worth the splurge for a special occasion.
Padbok Thai Restaurant (Hatfield): Craving authentic Thai food? This spot is a local favourite for its delicious and vibrant flavours. Mains range from R120-R200 ($6.50-$11 USD).
Capital Craft Beer Academy (Menlo Park): A super relaxed spot with an incredible selection of craft beers on tap and delicious gourmet burgers and pub grub. Perfect for a casual evening with friends. Burgers around R100-R180 ($5.50-$10 USD), craft beers R50-R80 ($2.50-$4.50 USD) per pint.
Market at The Sheds (monthly event): If you’re lucky enough to be there on the last Saturday of the month (check their schedule!), don’t miss this! A vibrant market with amazing street food, local crafts, and live music. Food stalls offer dishes for R50-R150 ($2.50-$8 USD).

Nightlife & Entertainment (Clubs & Bars)

While not as wild as Cape Town or Johannesburg, Pretoria has a decent nightlife, especially around the student areas of Hatfield and Menlyn. You’ll find a good mix of pubs, bars, and clubs.

«Beaches» & Natural Escapes (A Realistic Look)

Let’s be clear: Pretoria is an inland city, so there are no ocean beaches! However, if you’re looking for natural beauty and relaxation, the city delivers in other fantastic ways. Think lush gardens, wildlife, and even lakeside fun a short drive away.

Pretoria National Botanical Garden: (Entry: R50-R60, about $2.50-$3.50 USD) A stunning oasis of indigenous flora, beautifully landscaped and meticulously maintained. Perfect for a picnic, a leisurely walk, or just unwinding amidst beautiful greenery.
Groenkloof Nature Reserve: (Entry: R60-R80 for adults, about $3.50-$4.50 USD + vehicle fee R40) South Africa’s first game reserve! Just minutes from the city centre, you can enjoy hiking, mountain biking, and even spot giraffes, zebras, and various antelopes in a natural bushveld setting. It’s a fantastic escape from urban life.
Day Trip to Hartebeespoort Dam («Harties»): (Approx. 1 hour drive, activities vary in price) While not a beach, «Harties» offers excellent water-based activities like scenic boat cruises (R150-R300, $8-$16 USD), watersports, and beautiful lakeside restaurants. You can even take the Aerial Cableway for incredible panoramic views (R250-R300 return, $14-$16 USD). It’s a very popular weekend getaway and worth the drive!

Ideal Travel Time & Duration

Best Time to Visit: Autumn (March to May) and Spring (September to November) offer pleasant temperatures, less rain, and lush landscapes. Summer (December to February) can be very hot with afternoon thunderstorms, while winter (June to August) is dry and sunny but can get chilly at night. I went in April, and the weather was absolutely perfect – warm days, cool evenings!
Recommended Duration: I’d say 3 to 4 full days is ideal to cover the main historical sites, enjoy a museum or two, savour the local cuisine, and experience some natural beauty without feeling rushed. If you add a day trip to Hartebeespoort Dam, make it 5 days for a truly comprehensive experience.
