Rome: An Unforgettable Journey Through Time, Taste, and Charm!

23.09.202523.09.2025

Just got back from an incredible trip to Rome, and I’m still buzzing! If you’re planning a visit to the Eternal City, you’re in for a treat. From ancient ruins to vibrant nightlife, delicious food to stunning art, Rome has it all. Here’s my detailed review and tips to help you make the most of your adventure!

Historical Wonders & Iconic Landmarks

Rome is an open-air museum, and every corner tells a story. Prepare to walk a lot!

  • The Colosseum & Roman Forum: Absolutely breathtaking. We booked a combined ticket online in advance (€18) to skip the long lines, which was a lifesaver. Go early in the morning to beat the crowds and the heat. The Forum and Palatine Hill are included and offer incredible views.
  • The Pantheon: Free to enter and still astounding. The oculus is a marvel of ancient engineering. Try to visit during the day when the light pours in.
  • Vatican City (St. Peter’s Basilica & Vatican Museums): A must-see. St. Peter’s Basilica is free, but expect queues. The Vatican Museums (including the Sistine Chapel) require a ticket (€17 online, book weeks ahead!). The sheer scale and artistry are overwhelming. Dress code is strict (shoulders and knees covered).
  • Trevi Fountain & Spanish Steps: Iconic spots, always crowded but worth seeing. Throw a coin in the Trevi Fountain to ensure your return to Rome! Both are free to visit.

Getting Around: Transfers & Public Transport

Navigating Rome is surprisingly straightforward.

  • Airport Transfer (Fiumicino — FCO): We took the Leonardo Express train from FCO to Termini Station (€14 one-way, ~32 minutes). It’s efficient and comfortable. Alternatively, several bus services (Terravision, SIT Bus Shuttle) are cheaper (€6-€7) but take longer. A taxi can cost €50-€60 fixed rate.
  • Within the City: The metro is great for longer distances, while buses and trams cover everything else. A single ticket (BIT) costs €1.50 and is valid for 100 minutes, allowing transfers between different public transport types. A 24-hour pass is €7, 48-hour is €12.50. We mostly walked, which is the best way to discover hidden gems!

A Culinary Journey: Restaurants & Food

Oh, the food! Rome is a paradise for foodies. Forget fancy restaurants, go for authentic trattorias.

  • Trattoria da Enzo al 29 (Trastevere): A local favorite, always busy! Expect a wait, but it’s worth it for classic Roman pasta like Cacio e Pepe or Carbonara (€12-€15 per dish). Portions are generous.
  • Pizzeria Baffetto (Navona area): For a classic Roman thin-crust pizza experience (€8-€14 per pizza). Casual and lively atmosphere.
  • Gelateria: Don’t miss out on artisanal gelato! My favorite was Gelateria della Palma near the Pantheon (prices start at €3 for two scoops).
  • Coffee: A quick espresso at the bar (€1-€1.20) is a must.

Beach Escape: A Day Trip to the Coast

Yes, Rome has beaches nearby! A perfect escape from the summer heat.

  • Ostia Lido: The closest and most accessible beach, about 30-40 minutes by train from Piramide station (€1.50 for a standard metro ticket). It’s a lively, mostly sandy beach with both free and paid sections (stabilimenti where you pay for sun loungers and umbrellas, ~€10-€20 for the day).
  • Santa Severa: A bit further (about an hour by regional train from Termini, ~€4.60 one-way) but worth it for its stunning medieval castle right on the beach. Less crowded and more picturesque than Ostia Lido.

Rome After Dark: Clubs & Nightlife

Rome’s nightlife surprised me! It’s not as wild as some other European cities, but it’s definitely fun.

  • Trastevere: This neighborhood comes alive at night with bustling bars and lively squares. Great for aperitivo and drinks. Many small bars, often with no cover charge, drinks €6-€10.
  • Testaccio & Pigneto: These areas are where you’ll find more dedicated clubs and live music venues. Expect entry fees of €10-€20, often including a drink. Look up places like Akab or Ex Dogana for electronic music, or riverside clubs along the Tiber during summer.

Art & Culture: Museums

Beyond the Vatican, Rome offers incredible museums.

  • Borghese Gallery & Museum: A must-visit for art lovers, housing masterpieces by Bernini and Caravaggio. You MUST book tickets in advance, often weeks ahead (€13 + booking fee). Limited entry times.
  • Capitoline Museums: Located on Capitoline Hill, designed by Michelangelo, these museums offer a fantastic collection of ancient Roman artifacts and sculptures, including the iconic Capitoline Wolf (€15).

Final Thoughts & Budget Tips

Rome exceeded all expectations. It’s a city that truly lives up to its legendary status.

  • Accommodation: Prices vary wildly. Expect €80-€150/night for a decent mid-range hotel or Airbnb.
  • Food & Drink: You can eat very well on a budget by sticking to local trattorias and street food (pizza al taglio, supplì). A full day of food could be €30-€50 per person if you’re smart.
  • Overall Budget: Excluding flights, I’d estimate around €80-€150 per person per day, depending on your style of travel (mid-range).
  • Walking: Wear comfortable shoes! You’ll be doing a lot of walking.
  • Learn Basic Italian: «Buongiorno,» «Grazie,» «Per favore» go a long way.

Rome is a truly magical place. Go, explore, eat, and immerse yourself in its history. You won’t regret it!
