Just returned from an absolutely incredible trip to Thessaloniki (or Салоники, as it’s known in some circles), and I’m still buzzing with excitement! This city truly has it all – a rich tapestry of history, delicious food, vibrant nightlife, and even nearby beaches. If you’re planning a Greek getaway, put Thessaloniki at the top of your list. Here’s everything I learned to help you plan your ideal trip!

Getting There & Around

My journey started at Makedonia Airport (SKG), which is conveniently close to the city center. Getting into town was a breeze:

Bus X1/N1: The most economical option. It runs 24/7. A ticket costs around €1.80-2.00 and the journey takes about 45-60 minutes depending on traffic. You can buy tickets directly on the bus, but exact change is always appreciated.
Taxi: For convenience, especially if you have a lot of luggage, a taxi is a good choice. Expect to pay around €25-35 for a ride to the city center. Always confirm the price beforehand or ensure the meter is running.

Once in the city, I found Thessaloniki very walkable, especially the main historical and commercial areas. For longer distances or when my feet got tired, the local bus system (OASTH) was efficient and affordable (single ticket around €1.00-1.20). Keep an eye out for the new Metro system, which is expected to open soon and will make getting around even easier!

Savoring Thessaloniki: Restaurants & Food Scene

Oh, the food! Thessaloniki is a culinary paradise. From street food to elegant dining, every meal was an experience.

Street Food Delights: You absolutely *must* try a classic Gyros or Souvlaki. Expect to pay around €3-5 for a delicious, filling wrap. Thessaloniki is also famous for its Bougatsa (a custard-filled pastry) for breakfast, usually around €2.50-4.
Tavernas & Mezedopolia: For a more relaxed meal, head to the Ladadika district or along the waterfront. I loved sharing a variety of Mezedes (small plates) with friends – think grilled octopus, saganaki (fried cheese), fresh salads, and local dips. A good meal with a few mezedes and drinks typically costs around €15-25 per person. Don’t forget to try local wines or Ouzo/Tsipouro!

Ladadika: This historic district, once a market, is now packed with charming bars, tavernas, and some clubs. It’s a great place to start your evening, with a lively atmosphere and music spilling out onto the streets.
Valaoritou Street: Known for its younger crowd and more intense clubbing scene, Valaoritou and the surrounding streets offer a plethora of bars and nightclubs with various music genres.
Waterfront Bars: Enjoy a cocktail with a view along the long promenade, especially around the White Tower area. Cocktail prices generally range from €8-12.

Sun & Sand: Beaches Near the City

While Thessaloniki itself doesn’t boast city beaches, there are fantastic options just a short ride away for when you need a dose of sun and sea.

Perea, Agia Triada, Neoi Epivates: These charming coastal towns are easily accessible by bus (or even a summer ferry from the port) and offer sandy beaches, cafes, and tavernas. It’s perfect for a half-day or full-day escape. Bus tickets are standard local rates.
Chalkidiki: For the ultimate Greek beach experience, consider a day trip or even an overnight stay in Chalkidiki. It’s about an hour’s drive away and boasts some of Greece’s most beautiful turquoise waters and white sands. You can arrange tours or rent a car.

I found that the best times to visit Thessaloniki are:

Spring (April-May): Pleasant temperatures, fewer crowds, and the city is in bloom. Ideal for sightseeing and walking.
Autumn (September-October): Similar to spring, with comfortable weather and the sea still warm enough for swimming in early autumn.
Summer (June-August): Hot and busy, especially in August. Great for beach lovers, but sightseeing might be more challenging due to the heat. Prices for accommodation can be higher.

Final Thoughts

Thessaloniki exceeded all my expectations. It’s a city that effortlessly blends ancient history with a vibrant modern pulse. From exploring Roman ruins and Byzantine churches to feasting on incredible Greek food and dancing the night away, every moment was filled with discovery. The warmth of the people, the stunning waterfront, and the sheer volume of things to see and do make it an absolutely ideal travel destination. I can’t wait to go back!
