From vibrant streets to stunning natural beauty, historical gems to a buzzing culinary scene, Wellington has it all. If you’re planning a visit, here’s my detailed rundown to help you craft your perfect itinerary!

Getting There & Getting Around: Smooth Sailing in the Windy City

My journey started at Wellington International Airport (WLG). Getting into the city center was a breeze:

Airport Bus (Metlink Route 3 or 34): The most economical option. A single fare is around NZD 5-10, depending on your destination and payment method (Snapper card is cheaper). It takes about 20-30 minutes.
Taxi/Uber/Ola: Quick and convenient, expect to pay around NZD 30-45 for a ride to the central business district.
Airport Shuttles: Shared ride services like Super Shuttle can be a good middle ground, costing about NZD 25-35 per person.

Once in the city, Wellington is incredibly walkable. For longer distances, the Metlink bus system is efficient. Grab a Snapper card for cheaper fares. And of course, don’t miss the iconic Wellington Cable Car – a fun ride and a quick way up to the Botanic Garden and a stunning viewpoint (NZD 5 one-way, NZD 9 return).

- Scopa Pizzeria: Authentic Italian pizzas and delicious pasta. Pizzas generally NZD 25-35.

Cafes: Wellington takes its coffee seriously!

Expect a good coffee to be around NZD 5-6, a casual lunch NZD 18-30, and a nice dinner NZD 40-70+ per person without drinks.

Wellington’s stunning harbour means beautiful beaches are never far away, even if the water is a bit chilly sometimes!

Oriental Bay: The city’s golden crescent, perfect for a stroll, sunbathing, or a quick dip. Easily accessible by foot from the CBD.
Scorching Bay: A beautiful, sheltered beach perfect for a picnic and swim, a short bus ride away.
Lyall Bay: Popular with surfers due to its open exposure to the Tasman Sea. Great for watching the waves!
Island Bay: A picturesque coastal suburb with a marine reserve – great for snorkeling or diving on a calm day.
Mount Victoria Lookout: Not a beach, but a must-do for panoramic views of the city, harbour, and beyond. Free to access, you can walk, drive, or take a bus.

Nightlife & Entertainment: When the Sun Goes Down

Wellington truly comes alive after dark. The city offers a fantastic range of bars and clubs.

Courtenay Place: This area is the hub for nightclubs and larger bars.
- Establishment: A popular spot for dancing and mainstream hits.
- Library Bar: A more sophisticated cocktail bar with a cozy, bookish atmosphere. Cocktails usually NZD 16-22.
Cuba Street & Surrounds: More eclectic, with live music venues and unique bars.
- Laundry Bar: Often has DJs and a lively crowd.
- Havana Bar: Famous for its Cuban vibe, live music, and delicious mojitos (NZD 18-20).

Entry fees to clubs are generally rare, but some special events might have one (e.g., NZD 10-20). A craft beer will set you back around NZD 10-14.

Accommodation & Ideal Travel Time: Plan Your Stay

Accommodation:
- Hostels: From NZD 30-60 per night for a dorm bed.
- Mid-Range Hotels: Expect NZD 150-280 per night for a good quality hotel room.
- Luxury Stays: From NZD 300+ per night.
Ideal Travel Time: I visited in late spring/early summer (November-February) and the weather was mostly pleasant, albeit still «Wellington windy» at times! Autumn (March-May) is also beautiful with mild weather. Winter (June-August) can be cold and wet, but still offers indoor attractions.
Recommended Duration: I found 3-5 full days to be ideal to explore the main sights without feeling rushed.
